A History of
Dalbeattie Community Allotments
at Biggar Gardens

Beginnings: 2008–2010
Dalbeattie Community Allotments Association began at a public meeting in Dalbeattie Town Hall on 16 April 2008. Nineteen local residents attended, united by the idea that Dalbeattie should once again have its own allotment site. A volunteer committee was formed to explore land options, funding, and community support.
The next two years were filled with challenges, setbacks, and determination. Despite obstacles, the committee continued to push forward — and in early 2010, a breakthrough came. A local landowner generously offered a 25‑year lease on land at the edge of town for £1 per year. This act of generosity made the project possible.
The lease was signed on 30 April 2010. The very next day, volunteers arrived on site with tools, energy, and a shared vision.
Building the First Allotments: 2010–2011
What happened next became a local success story. Through community effort, goodwill, and many hours of physical work, the empty field was transformed. In just six weeks, the first plots were ready for cultivation. By April 2011, less than a year after work began, the site had:
- 48 productive plots
- Sheds, raised beds, and composting areas
- A growing membership
- A strong sense of community pride
Support from local organisations played a vital role. The Rotary Club of Dalbeattie provided a significant £5,000 donation (the Jim Eaves bequest), helping the site develop quickly and sustainably. The allotments soon became a model for other community projects across Dumfries and Galloway, with groups visiting to learn from Dalbeattie’s experience.

Expansion and Recognition: 2011–2012
Demand for plots continued to rise, and in 2011 the Biggar family generously provided additional land. Work on the extension began in July 2011 and was completed in August 2012.
The expansion increased the site to 74 plots, allowing more local residents — including Cubs, Beavers, and Scouts — to enjoy growing their own food.
In 2011, the Association received the Stewartry Community Group of the Year Award, recognising the dedication of volunteers and the strength of community support.

Continuing the Story
Since those early years, the allotments have continued to evolve. The community area and memorial garden have become peaceful spaces for visitors, and the site remains a valued part of Dalbeattie life.
The story of the allotments is one of determination, generosity, and community spirit — and it continues to grow with every new season.
